Back in the Day Series – Nigerian Pop Music (80s)
Back in the 80s, the Nigerian pop scene was filled with very good imports from the USA and to a lesser extent the UK. Nigerians were fed on a weekly diet of Don Cornelius’ Soul Train TV show. Most folks at the time could reel without blinking, track after track on the latest Evelyn King album. Some of these artists staged concerts in Nigeria thanks to Ben Bruce – groups like Lakeside, Kool & the gang and so on.
Locked up in a quiet corner and still doing their thing were a collection of Nigerian pop (or Afro Soul) musicians. At the time, piracy wasn’t so much an issue. People were actually buying LPs and cassettes. However there were a significant number of folks that did pop into record stores and recorded a selection of tracks onto a cassette (Chrome/Metal – BASF and Sony made some money at the time). You had to pay for this service, and one wonders whether your payment ever made its way back to the artist. The copyright laws were rather slack at the time, but everyone seemed happy with this arrangement. Hindsight being such a great thing, I am pretty sure that most of the musicians at the time would have preferred a better deal. Still…
This post at any rate lists and pays tribute to some of the folks that made it to the top of the tree. They were household names at the time and some of the names listed are still relevant to the music industry today. Some have gone on to do other things while a few are no longer with us. As with many things, I may have skipped a few names…please fill in the blanks

nice list you have there! if i could be forgiven for nitpicking, a few corrections i would like to make….
Bunny Mack was Sierra Leonean, not Nigerian. of course, his music was pretty big in Nigeria (and most of the African continent)
rather than “Vera Ifudu” you mean “Dora (Theadora) Ifudu”
and i would add
Jake Sollo
The Esbee Family
Terry Mackson
BLO
Uche Ibeto
Nelly Uchendu
Veno
Carol Bridi
Harry Mosco
George Ema
Toby Foyeh
and so on…

I found this website while looking for one of my all time favourite singers, and what a joy! Many thanks to Ababoy for refreshing my memory about other singers. Thanks too to Uchenna about Dora Ifudu, who I was looking for in the first place. I was beginning to question my memory on whether it was ‘Dora’ or ‘Vera’. Does anyone know what she’s up to? Been trying to download her music but so far it’s not been possible. Ah, well.
Uchenna | Sep 12, 2007 | Reply
Kunle:
glad i was able to help you out there… let’s see if i can do it again!
after Dora Ifudu walked away from the music scene in the 1980s, i understand she left the country and worked on other things, such as visual arts. she even had exhibitions in New York: http://www.nimbusartcentre.com/exhibition.htm (scroll down to “International (Away)” and look at “The Return”)
as of a few years ago, she was talking about making a comeback to music, though:

as for downloading her songs, which ones are you looking for? i post a lot of vintage Naija pop music on my blog, and i intend to add some of her stuff soon…
hope that info is useful to you!

He has been touring in Europe, Canada and the United States.
An internet search will reveal he currently tours with his group Orchestra Africa promoting a version of Afro rock

Hi Uchena, Sorry for my late reply. Many thanks for the update on Dora Ifudu. The songs I’m looking for are in her ‘The way we are album’. So tracks like ‘The way we are’, one haunting ballad with the following lyrics: “What is wrong with that/What is wrong with that/I ask you/Everything is alright…”. Then there’s this massive Ibo (or Calabar?) song. Again I don’t know the title, but will attempt to type the lyrics: “Ma tam gba egbuobi ashe…” Hope all this makes sense. Thanks once again. Have a good week.

The only good memory I have of the 80’s are all those great pop songs that shaped our social life then. When ever the present day realities of our shattered nation Nigeria wants to bring me down’I reflect on thr relics of our pop music of 80’s.Those songs have psychological healing powers behind them. Then Nigeria was sweet. Will a season like that ever come again?

Alex o was more like a brother to me,i am of the opinion that many people in that era did not entirely understand the wealth of blessings and talent he was bestowed with.I was there from the very beginning and i was first-hand witness to his dexterity in music and i was also present when he took his lumps at Paradiso courtesy of Yinka craig who did not think Alex was ready to be a star.Subsequently,we went to the great steve Rhodes who i watched transformed Alex into a student of music.Hey anyone who cares, pls tell Alex to hit me up on my email.
