Dr Stong, an international volunteer: “Back then I wanted simply to bring water to poor people. Today my wish is to infuse into “poor people” that they themselves have the ability to better their own lives.”

The conversation continues with Dr Stong. In this post, he describes the challenges he faced and the excitement of working with the volunteers on the bridge project in Nigeria.

Dr Stong: “When I retired 10 years ago and decided to focus the rest of my life on humanitarian efforts, being a volunteer engineer, especially for water supply, I decided Africa had to be the premier challenge for seeking success.”
Although he’s retired, Dr Stong is not your typical retiree. As a 67 year old grandfather and father of six engineer sons, Dr Stong who is also an engineer -holds a doctorate degree in Civil Engineering - is a highly decorated war veteran (Korea and Vietnam), and the former Director of Engineering, US Forces, West Berlin, Germany. He was also the former Director of the Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory, (a federal agency in America), and a former Technical Director of the US Army Strategic Defense Command (”Star Wars Program”) - a $1.2 billion dollar project. He has also spent some 37 years as a Sunday School Instructor. See his resume.
