Conversation with Nigerian Top Actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD)…

“Nollywood met me on the scene” – RMD

rmd.jpgRichard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) is one of Nigeria’s most recognizable faces; he’s been in the spotlight for a long time. He reveals to us that his acting career started “straight out of youth service; Nollywood met me on the scene”, he declares.

Even though he likes to play “well grounded characters” in his movies, RMD wears several hats: he’s a playwright, poet, publisher, entrepreneur, and recently bagged a law degree from University of Lagos.

I tracked him down in Delta State, Nigeria, for a quick one-on-one (Q&A) session:

What he’s up to now:
I work for the Delta State Government as Special Adviser to the Governor on Entertainment and Talent Development. I’m learning the sax.

Life in law school:
Law school was a challenge; eating humble pie and keeping your eyes on the price. I love rigorous intellectual exercise. I went to law school to expand my world.

Nollywood bans RMD?
I was not banned, I went to law school. Besides, its old story now. The marketers panicked and became clumsy and took some bad decisions. They went about recanting in a round-about fashion to save face.

Uniqueness and challenges facing Nollywood:
Nollywood tells its own stories and it does not conform to any known cinematic tradition. It’s cheap. If the right steps are taken towards structuring all layers of production, it would become a global success and get into mainstream.

Nollywood Favorites:
Movie: “Out of Bounds” because I wrote and produced it.
Actor: Desmond Elliot.
Actresses: Joke Jacobs.

Key to success in Nollywood:
Money and professionalism, which would mean proper structure from writing to distribution. Advice to aspiring actors/actress: Know your craft. Read wide.

What he likes in movie scripts:
Stories with well grounded characters.

Best career advice ever received:
No small roles, only small actors.

How he prepares for movie roles:
I study, study, study…

Reaction to his kids following in footsteps:
I’ll only guide. My second son in Canada is already making movies.

This may answer your question Francis:

    Childhood
Richard Mofe-Damijo was born on July 6, 1961 in Delta State in Nigeria. His full name is Richard Evans Eyimofe Mofe-Damijo. He is from a family of 18 children. While he has many siblings through his father’s polygamous relationships, he is the only child of his mother and is thus strongly bonded to her. Living with his mother, he learned to perform most women’s chores. Therefore, it is not surprising that he is a good cook. Growing up, Richard learned to speak English, Pidgin and Urhobo.

    Education
While a student, Richard Mofe-Damijo acted in several stage productions and continuing till now, he still loves the stage. He was educated at Midwest College, Warri and Anglican Grammar School, Okpara Waterside, near Sapele in the Old Bendel State. Thereafter, he studied for his A-levels , before gaining admission into University of Benin He graduated from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) witha a degree in Theater specializing in dramatic theory and criticism. He studied at University of Benin from 1980-1983 and earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. Hons). Then, he studied law from 1999-2004 at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Richard’s talent started revealing itself when he was a young boy playing in his Warri, Delta State neighborhood. In primary school, he took the roles of Jesus or Peter in biblical dramas. In secondary school, he was a member of the drama club where he played both male and female roles. He was also involved in martial arts. This made it a natural transition for him to proceed to the Cook Theater of Arts Department of University of Benin. From his first year, he started playing lead roles, which provided clear evidence of his talent and charisma. In 1982, while RMD was still in University, he played the lead character “Emeka” in “Echoes of Wrath”. This was his first exposure on television. Fortunately for RMD, “Echoes of Wrath” won the Nigerian Television Authority national annual drama competition and so the film was syndicated to all NTA stations nationwide and thus he became a drama celebrity.

RMD is one of the better known Nollywood Actors, but to be quite honest, this interview didn’t bring out the essence of the man. It focused more on RMD becoming a lawyer than the RMD who is an actor. There are basic questions that should have been asked like, “why did he go into acting?”, “his relationship with MEE”, “what has he learnt so far on his journey?”.

Pls, be more thorough in your interview.

    Lola,
    A Nollywood fan

  9. Paula | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

Lola, maybe next time you can do the interview since you are so CRITICAL of what was done here!
Good job by the way Misi. I know how difficult it can be sometimes trying to get information from these stars.

  10. Paula | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

    Paula,
    Misi & Nollywood fan!

  11. Ify | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

Lola, What essence of the man did you want? This is a short and precise interview and a good one at that! You are welcome to your views but to attack the author is very mean spirited.

  12. Paula | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

    Well said Ify!

  13. lola | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

We know RMD the actor not RMD the lawyer, that shouldn’t have been the focus of the interview. It should have focused more on his struggle and challenges surviving as an actor in Nigeria.

We know that it is difficult to get such a person to be interviewed but next time, focus on what makes the person popular.

That is not being mean spirited, it is being honest and we all know that is what we are thinking.

  14. Misi | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

@Lola, out of all the questions there, only one related to his law school experience. So I don’t understand how the whole interview is only focusing on his legal career.
Secondly just in case you haven’t noticed RMD hasn’t been in any movie lately unless you want me to question about old movies he did years ago which is probably statle story now. Just in case you didn’t notice the interview was geared more towards finding out what RMD is up to NOW etc hence the info about law school and his new annointment. So your suggestion about MEE etc is old news considering he’s been married to Jumobi for some years now and they have two kids.
Also the interview aimed to extract information you wouldn’t normally fine on Wikipedia or by googling his name.

  15. Omotaylor | Mar 27, 2008 | Reply

Following the discussion above I tend to agree with Misi’s comment and to be honest Lola, what you are requesting you could easily get by googling RMD’s name e.g. my response to Francis on March 20th. What Misi has done is bring out the current and it is a good interview and maybe I am not seeing what you are seeing but have you made note that the interview in excerpt form is concise, direct but informative. Next time, instead of launching on the attack as you have done, a more mature way would be for you to fill in the missing links while minding the gaps (which for now only you have found). I am not saying that you are not entitled to your opinion, but well founded opinion has more credence than what you have stated.

We all love RMD and Nollywood dont we? Hence we all, Lola, Misi, Paula, Ify and of course Omotaylor (all ladies) are ommenting out of love, arent we? So group hug and pens to paper next valentine day, to win him over, quo?

I have watched operas and other show that RMD featured with great delight. The first time I saw him in opera show in the late 80s; it was so nice seeing him on TV.

He acts so well and he is also one of the best male specker we have in the industry. I like him as a person and an actor but my advise to him is this:

He should be a good boy both at home and in the industry, he should also be good general for I see him so though I have not meet him to know if actually he is so.

But let my words go with him. keep it up and always be good.

  17. naijalife | Apr 7, 2008 | Reply

i was opportuned to sit beside RMD once on a flight to Port Harcourt from Lagos and i found him to be a very quiet, soft spoken man. I love his wife, Jumobi too.I think we should all always try to encourage these people and thereby promote our country too. Misi, i still maintain it, you are a wonderful woman….lots of love

  18. naijalife | Apr 7, 2008 | Reply

i think Lola meant no harm to you Misi. Everyone has a right to thier opinions and i think she meant well, the problem was just the way she tendered it. Lola, it was just an honest, probably brief interview and all the details of RMD’S life may not be captured by just a few minutes with Misi. So, make do with what you got here.
i beleive RMD is doing very well for himself, lets just wish him well people…haba

Hello RMD, the first movie that i saw was the movie Voilated; i think that was in the late 80’s. That was when i fell in love with you, i have since then followed most of your movies; you’ve done a great job keep it up and God bless you. Also congratulations on going back to school b’cos it’s not so easy going back to school but yet you did anyway, more power to you.Good Luck with everything.
