Some Africa bloggers may remember that Corneille E.N. Ewango was the answer to a hard question on the list of the Africa Quiz 2005 organized by Ethan Zuckerman at My Heart's in Accra. Ewango was my entry to the quiz as this man has been a personal hero of mine ever since I read about his story and his important work to help preserve life (animal, plant, and human) in the forests of the eastern DRC during the dark years of the Congo Wars.

It was wonderful to learn that Ewango was in attendance at the TED Global 2007 conference in Arusha, Tanzania and it is one of my dreams to be able to shake his hand one day for the bravery he showed in the face of death and unbelievable atrocities being carried out in the Ituri forests. This humble botanist and environmentalists is the epitome of what a real hero is all about.

The Ituri rainforest is where the Mbuti (pygmies) live, but Mr. Ewango seems to have a different ethnic background. I wonder how hard it is to strike a balance between respect for native culture and wildlife preservation?
