“From January 1, 2008, government will impose fines on operators that still flare gas and from December 31, 2008, the oilfields of defaulting operators will be shut,”

Nigeria’s oil and gas industry regulator intends to start fining companies $3.5 for every 1,000 standard cubic feet of gas flared from Jan. 1 next year, a senior official at the regulator said on Monday.

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) also said oilfields that still flared gas associated with oil extraction would be closed down after Dec. 31, 2008.

When I was in secondary school and visited Portharcourt, I used to be awed by the beautiful gas flare sites. Never thought of all the environmental problems this was causing. Well I beleive Nigeria is right in her attempt to do something but will this innitiative be succesful, or would a new bribery and corruption avenue be opened by this? Lets wait and see. Hmmmm

This is an “all-or-none” task. The flares can’t be hidden, even a blind person will know when they have all been extinguished. This call is decades overdue and I think with the proper push and attention, they will all be shut down, at least on onshore.

This is great news! I am certain that with the right government policy and corporate management that Nigerian natural gas will find its proper use and market in the world’s economy.
