Is it Time for a New Nigerian Anthem?
Compare this:
Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear motherland
Though tribe and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians, am proud to serve
Our native motherland.
With this:
Arise o compatriot
Nigeria’s call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
The labours of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain
To serve with all our might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.
WHICH RINGS TRUER? WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER? AND WHY?
For me I believe we need a brand new one which goes (To the tune of “Spirit Divine Attend Our Prayers”):
I PLEDGE TO THEE NIGERIA
MY DEAREST MOTHERLAND
SO FULL OF LOVE AND CULTURE
ALL THIS WE MUST MAINTAIN
WE LONG TO SEE YOUR FREEDOM
TO HAVE ALL AMENITIES
TO RID YOU FROM ALL LOOTERS
AND TRAIN OUR CHILDREN RIGHT
WE PLEDGE TO FIGHT INJUSTICE
AND PUT YOU FIRST ALWAYS.
WE WILL LOVE YOU FOREVERMORE
GOD BE WITH US FOREVER.
AMEN.
