Liberians Report Rubber Pollution
Residents living near a rubber plantation in the Liberian town of Harbel say pollution from the plant is affecting their lives. Residents have complained the plantation is damaging their health and ruining their livelihoods. The Firestone Natural Rubber Plantation is the second largest in Africa, and has been operating in Harbel since 1926. In a statement to IRIN news, the company said it is committed to maintaining high standards and said the water treated from its plant is of an excellent quality. Residents living near the plantation have complained of being unable to drink or fish from the creek because it has been contaminated by toxins. An investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency found evidence of pollution but is yet to publish its findings. – Panos, London.
