Where the People and Friends of Africa Mingle

Lucky Dube: An African Musical Legend Bites the Dust.

It was about 12 am when I learnt that Lucky Dube the South African reggae musical legend had been shot down in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have been dealing with the shock all day. I watched this man perform a couple of months ago in New York City and I was amazed at how much his music could bring together all classes and races of people. Lucky Dube’s music is clearly Africanized reggae music. One cannot have a conversation involving reggae music and Africa without listing his name as one of Africa’s top reggae performers. I am saddened at the loss and his family is definitely in my prayers.

I hope this situation brings the global medias eyes to what is going on with young black youths in South Africa where many are turning to a life of crime to have access to the “good things of life” . Though South Africa is cited as one full of natural resources and is noted as one of the top destination of global travelers - it is still a country ridden with a high crime rate. According to data collected on crime, South Africa has the second highest rate of murder, rapes, assaults with firearms in the world.

I know that many will cite post apartheid syndrome as the reason why these crime rate is so high but I do not think that law abiding Africans or global citizens should keep on using this as an excuse. It is quite clear that there is a problem and it is up to us to find a way of solving it. Please, click the link (LUCKY DUBE) below and think of a 43 year old promising young father with a wife and children who was gutted down by youths who were looking for some quick cash. Also, enjoy this video by him ..I am sure it will bring tears to your eyes.

Just like you Pammy, i’ve been dealing with the shock all day too. It’s just so hard to believe that we won’t be seeing him again. The South African Gvt should seriously look into gun and knife crime in South Africa as a matter of high priority. There is no excuse for committing such heinous crimes, particularly in South Africa where the cost of living is relatively lower than most African states. There are countries literally living in economical disasters such as Zimbabwe, but they still don’t turn on each other with guns and knives for cheap cash.

Just a couple of months ago, i lost a dear friend of mine who had just left his young family to find a job in SA. He was gunned down because the robbers wanted the few rands in his pocket.I hope justice will catch up with whoever is responsible for ending Lucky’s life in such a callous and cowardly manner.

Obviously, his fans were the “lucky” ones. I had not heard him before, so thanks for the video clip.
