Malawi Opens telecentre in Rural Area

Malawi’s government has launched a telecentre in the southern region of Thyolo. The centre is part of a government initiative to boost information and communication technologies (ICT) in rural areas. It was opened at Goliati by the country’s minister of Information and Civic Education Patricia Kaliati. The centre has Internet-connected computers, fax machines, telephones and a modern library. The government is expected to launch more initiatives in other regions. Africa still lags behind in ICTs especially in rural areas where people do not know how to use computers. The launching of telecentres is expected to narrow the gap. – Panos, London.
