Miracle on the Hudson: Pilot Ditched Jetliner into Frigid River, All Passengers Survived

The Associated Press reports a US Airways pilot ditched his disabled jetliner into the frigid Hudson River, New York City on Thursday afternoon after a collision with a flock of birds apparently knocked out both engines, but officials said rescuers safely pulled all 155 people on board into boats as the plane sank. Gov. David Paterson pronounced it “a miracle on the Hudson.”

Flight 1549 went down minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport for Charlotte, N.C., splashing into the river near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan — one of the busiest and most closely watched stretches of the river.

Was watching this on sky news and its a real miracle that no loss of lives, just a handful suffering from Hypothermia. The plane was partially submerged in the river and I believe have been moored. Or did it finally sink? Anyway we thank God for sparing so many lives and for the good signs that the Devil will not take over in 2009.

Kudos to the pilot. I heard he's a ex-fighter jet pilot.

It's always good to have good system in place — these pilots are well-trained, the rescue system was adequate and prompt. Imagine this happening in Nigeria, Lagos or Port Harcourt…

    God forbid!

Dare, it is sad that in the present times we could doubt the expertise of the Nigerian Pilot. In the 70s Nigerian Pilots were world class, training exemplary and the way they land planes…. effortless and smooth. ~Even when Nigeria Airways became defunct, the trained pilots of those years who sought employment outside Africa, had good luck. This just hammers another nail into the coffin called "Nigerian Deficiency". In Politics, Education, Finance, Morally and so on, Nigeria seems to be sinking deeper and deeper into oblivion. I long and yearn for the good old days when I would stand at the roof top and say it out that "I AM NIGERIAN AND PROUD". What can we do to restore dignity to Nigeria?

That said, yes the rescue system would have failed. For example, if there is a fire in Lagos, fire engines respond, get to the site and start asking if there is anywhere they can get water!!! Naija o. God please teach us to do the right things, on time.
