Nigerian Wife Kills Millionaire Husband With A Cooking Pestle
What is going on in the world? Why the series of murder? When did revenge or retaliation replace common sense? Just this week alone there has been 2 reports gruesome murder in the US and now this murder in Gambia.
The body of William West, the 76-year-old millionaire retired computer entrepreneur, was found on his holiday property in Gambia, dumped in a bin bag close to the beach. He had been beaten to death with a heavy cooking pestle and doused in petrol.
A High Court judge in Banjul, Gambia’s capital, convicted his Nigerian wife, Kate Artori, of the murder and sentenced her to life imprisonment. The 29-year-old had initially admitted to the murder back in 2006 but later retracted her statement, claiming she had been tortured into her confessing.
West and Artori had met in a bar on a Gambian beach in 2000, where West had gone with a friend for a holiday a year after his first wife, Doris, died from pneumonia. Artori, a farmer’s daughter from southern Nigeria, was 20 years old when she married the 70-year-old retired millionaire from Hastings, West Sussex, in a private registry ceremony in Edinburgh, U.K. Subsequently, Artori moved into West’s £750,000 home in Hastings, U.K.
West had bought the large beachside home on the Gambian resort of Sanyang for the couple’s regular visits to the country. West had told friends that the planned to travel to Gambia with Artori for a final trip and tell Artori that he wanted a divorce. It was during that visit, in July 2006, he disappeared. Artori returned to Britain and told friends that her husband went missing during a day-trip to neighbouring Senegal. She said he simply vanished while she waited outside a convenience store while he bought cigars, so she returned firstly to their Gambian home and then to the UK to look for him.
She was detained immediately she returned to Gambia. She later changed her story and directed detectives to the remains of her husband’s body, but claimed that five Nigerian men she knew were responsible for his death. While she was on remand, she confessed to the killing her husband, confessing to hitting West several times with a heavy wooden pestle used by Africans for cooking, then set him ablaze. The case dragged on for so long because Artori later retracted her confession.
“As the court has decided today, there is no basis for that claim,” said Superintendent Secka.
Artori will serve her sentence at the notorious Mile 2 prison outside Banjul. Her lawyer said last night that she would appeal her conviction.
It is obvious this marriage was motivated by money and when he wanted out she was disgruntled because she wanted the money. So rather than seeking counsel to save a marriage or just accepting her fate, she decided to pay him back for expressing his freewill with murder – insane. The crazy part is that she had the nerve to return to their home in the U.K and claim when asked about her husband’s whereabouts that he had simply gone missing – dumb or what.
