Turning Cassava Waste to Power
Posted by: CareTaker on May 29, 2008 Under: Africa, Discussion Lounge, Editor's Pick, Nigeria, Positive Africa
Fact: Africa generates abysmally low output of electricity. While Africa is flush with biomass, a sustainable and cheap source of energy, its use as an alternative fuel source for electric power plant is yet to take foothold.
This may be changing soon - Timbuktu Chronicles reports on a biomass/biogas powered “off-grid” power plant being developed by a Nigerian engineer. The zero-emission power plant will generate electricity enough to power about 2000 homes.
Why cassava waste?
Nigeria is the largest world producer of cassava, what better alternatives exist for disposing the yearly 32-metric-tonne-harvest? Better still, the residue of the cassava waste-biogas conversion process can be used as fertilizer. Smart!
